Why we do not Attend Tradeshows on Sunday

Posted on January 27, 2015 by Calvin Beeke | 23 comments

This has been a dilemma, a concern, and a question raised many times by our followers, our staff, and show personnel. I aim to attempt to answer it from my point of veiw to help you understand. First of all, let me tell you how hard it is to skip a Sunday at a show. 1st: Money –> I am saying goodbye to literally tens of thousands of dollars in sales of people who would purchase our DVDs and gear at shows on Sunday. 2nd: Threats -> We have been verbally assaulted and threatened by show owners/directors on multiple occasions. We have left being told we are not welcome back on one occasion. 3rd: Missing People -> Each year our loyal fans come back for the latest Season and we miss 20-30% of them who were not aware we did not attend Sunday. I value those relationships and those people.

With all those reasons, why do I choose to pack up Saturday night and head home giving up money and relationships and harming future potential? Here is why:

  1. My God has given me so much in this life. I write with emotion as I say this and I cannot think of a more blessed human being in this world than myself. A wonderful wife and family, a large home, great hunting land, multiple successful businesses, and a schedule that I decide. So if my God gives me all this, I read in his word, “Of whom much is given, much shall be required”. That begs the question of course -> What is required? God makes it clear throughout his Word that he gives us 6 days to labor and 1 day to rest. Why then would I make an exception on 12 of the 52 Sundays of the year to not rest, but work my butt off selling movies. I just can’t. If I “deny God before men, he will deny me.” He is not a harsh or hateful God. He is a loving God who has blessed me beyond my imagination who has given me guidelines to follow and glorify Him.

  1. My Church needs me, or rather I need them. I need to be with my church family on Sunday. I need to hear God’s Word preached. Some people say they can better hear God from a treestand. I don’t deny his presence there. In fact, my closest moments to God are the moments of quiet in a deer stand and he has taught me more lessons in humility from a tree. BUT, on that one day in seven, he has reserved a place in the pew for me. My Sunday School class consists of 7 inner city children. I get one opportunity for one hour to teach them. Is thousands of dollars in DVD sales more important than their souls? And in that one hour I get a little window into a little life with no consistency, no morals, and little hope. They soak in the gospel and I learn with them the simple lessons the Bible teaches us.

  1. My Family is my backbone. I work hard the entire week and I love my business. I hunt long hours and I work long hours. As I drop into bed Saturday night after spending a weekend on my feet while talking whitetails, Michigan, and hanging out with our fans at the show -> I look forward to Sunday and spending it with family. I get to be with my wife the entire day. I get to go to my Grandparents every Sunday lunch where our family of 20+ gathers to share, laugh, talk and guess how many meatballs are in the pot of soup (this week it was exactly 200 venison meatballs). I wouldn’t give up that day each week for anything, and frankly there is no other day that could replace it.

Do I occasionally think of the benefits of attending shows on Sunday? Yes. Do I think of having my employees be there instead of me? Yes. But they need to have a day of church, rest, and family each week too. I do not condemn any of you who choose differently. I do not condemn those who attend the show on Sunday nor do I condemn those who exhibit on Sunday. I just know after five years of questions from others, I need to answer why I choose for Venture Creations and Michigan Whitetail Pursuit to not exhibit on the Lord’s day. I hope this does not offend anyone and I pray you all find the value in Sunday, that one day that God gives us to be different from the rest.

Amen… To Biblical Connection…;) We need rather than to defend our traditions and mind set to our beliefs.. but rather biblical apologetics to defending our view points and a reasoning to a practice that isn’t hypocritical to the non-believer when they choose to read the WORD:)
Calvin … There is no doubt to me your intentions and reasons to your practice is 100% pure with intent with what you have been expose to…
with love….your brother:)

Calvin, you are a man of courage and conviction who loves GOD enough to put him above everything else. Thanks for being that type of leader!!! We need more like you!!!! I must also say that Ernie Wright is absolutely right above. I grew up just like you, Calvin, in that my dad being a pastor, we never missed Sunday church, morning or night. We also didn’t miss Wednesday night or other activities. I also remember lunch afterward with family and sometimes church families and even homecoming meals. We cherished time with family more than money. I still do like you. However, one change has come when I found out that the Roman Catholics Council of Laodicea (appropriately titled) started the assembly on Sunday instead of Saturday the Sabbath in A.D. 363. Do you know why? Constantine, a sun worshiper and a nominal “Christian” in name only in order to head the “church”, decided to become a “Christian” in A.D. 310 and he also decided to consecrate a day of worship to the sun on A.D. 321. The day of worship to the sun was then adopted by the Council of Laodicea to continue to bring unity in the Roman Empire between Christians and pagans. GOD abhorred pagan assimilation. Feel free to read more at these links (trust me I know what it is to take a stand as you can imagine since when I found out about the things in the following links, it made me different than my family, relatives, and friends but GOD always has your back): 1) https://biblicalconnection.wordpress.com/2014/05/17/sabbaths-devious-deceptions-and-deceivers 2) https://biblicalconnection.wordpress.com/2015/01/15/the-law-still-necessary 3) https://biblicalconnection.wordpress.com/2015/01/15/the-law-still-necessary 4) https://biblicalconnection.wordpress.com/2014/05/17/lords-day-what-day-is-it/ 5) https://biblicalconnection.wordpress.com/2013/11/14/pagan-assimilation-justified-by-answers-in-genesis 6) https://biblicalconnection.wordpress.com/2013/03/26/new-testament-model-learning-from-the-early-believers I hope these links help you. I won’t promise they’ll make your life easier and will probably make it harder, but they are solid with Scripture and historical facts.

Calvin, I am so glad to read this! Eloquently spoken. The Lord will continue to bless you as you honor Him. Taking up our cross and following Jesus does involve sacrifice, but He promises a reward greater than our sacrifice. A precious Saviour!

I think commerce in America need to follow your example of the truth of only working 6 days. God will bless you for continuing his example of Biblical principle and practice.in your family, business, church, your Sunday school class and life in general! I am so glad that he sent his Son to die on the cross for us, that we can have life eternal through him! I am even further Glad that because of Calvary, the old testament law has been nailed to the cross! Thank you for standing strong and “willing” to take the heat from people who don’t understand, but God will protect and encourage you to continue, strengthen and grow!!! Thank you for your stand for Christ.

As Jesus said, “keep my commandments” Remember the Sabbath Day! If you love Me, keep My commandments! Saturday is Gods 7th day Sabbath….Sunday is and always will be the first (1st) day of every week. I’m sure you are blessed and would be blessed more when you realize the whole truth about Gods Rest Day. Wish you the best.

You couldn’t have explained it any better Calvin. The fact you have more than one successful business at a young age is a testament that you don’t have to compromise your convictions for financial gain.
Keep walking the walk!

Thank you so much for having the courage and conviction to take a stand for your values and faith. It is so easy to justify the many ways we can fill our Sundays with “stuff”. As a Christian, I’m as guilty of this as anyone else. But it’s not so easy to go against the grain. Bravo, and add me to your list of supporters for your business. Hunt on!!

This is the type of prostaff I dream about being part of and what we need to see more of on TV. God supplies us with everything we need, and everything we want, and he is the reason we can go out and enjoy the sport of hunting. We owe it to him to spend at least Sunday praising his name for all he has given us. I appreciate your honesty and faith in God. Take care!
